Brendon McCullum addressed the media for the first time after stepping down as England’s red-ball head coach on Sunday, saying he was disappointed by the decision but accepted it with full respect.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of England’s three match ODI series against India, strating tomorrow, McCullum said: “I got a tap on the shoulder. Obviously I was disappointed initially. Well I am disappointed, not just initially, but at the same time I fully respect the decision. We’re in a results business and our results weren’t good enough and fundamentally it’s time for someone else to have a go.”

McCullum also looked back on his four-year stint with England cricket, calling it one of the greatest opportunity of his career. He thanked the players, support staff and everyone involved with the England Test set-up for their commitment throughout his tenure.

“I’ve felt incredibly privileged to be in the position that I’ve been in as England men’s Test head coach and I feel over the course of 20 odd years in this sport, the last four years have been possibly the biggest highlight that I’ve had. I’ve always been incredibly grateful for the opportunity,” he added.

He also apologised for England’s inability to deliver in the important Test series against India and Australia. “I think fundamentally again we just weren’t quite able to win those big series, the series against India, the series against Australia, the two marquee series,” he said. “We weren’t able to get the results in those and for that I guess I can only say sorry.”

When asked whether he had requested the ECB to keep him as Test coach, McCullum denied.

McCullum’s tenure as England’s Test coach has come to an end but he will continue to lead the national side in white-ball cricket.
