West Indies captain and all-rounder Hayley Matthews has created history by becoming the first player to win the ICC Player of the Month award five times, surpassing India batter Shubman Gill’s tally.
Matthews’ latest award comes after a remarkable month with both bat and ball during West Indies’ tour of Ireland in 2026. She was instrumental in the visitors’ 3-0 ODI series sweep, producing match-winning performances throughout the series.
In the opening ODI at Bready, Matthews first claimed three wickets before delivering a sensational unbeaten 159 to guide West Indies to victory. She followed it up with another century in the second ODI, finishing the series with 265 runs at an average of 132.50 and seven wickets at 17.57.
The award adds another milestone to Matthews’ already decorated career. Her five ICC Player of the Month wins have come in November 2021, October 2023, April 2024, June 2025 and July 2026.
Speaking to ICC after receiving the award, Matthews said the recognition would motivate her to continue improving and contributing to West Indies cricket.
“I am thrilled to win the ICC Player of the Month award once again. It is just as special as the previous ones, and I hope it inspires me to keep raising my standards, contributing to the West Indies, and winning more such awards in the future,” Matthews said, as quoted by the ICC.
Matthews recently played for MI London in the Women’s Hundred, and continues to underline her status as one of the leading all-rounders in world cricket. With 108 ODIs and 3,566 runs and 127 T20Is with 3,382 runs, Matthews’ numbers underline her consistency across formats. She currently stands as the number one-ranked T20I all-rounder and No. 2 ODI all-rounder in the world, further cementing her status as one of the finest all-rounders in women’s cricket.
