Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has praised Shubman Gill’s impact as India’s Test captain, saying the young batter has showed great maturity and leadership during the England series. Ashwin also backed Gill to carry the momentum into home conditions.
Speaking on JioStar, Ashwin highlighted impressive performance in England. “Shubman Gill had a fantastic series in England,” he said. “As soon as he was made captain, he went there and delivered, both with the bat and with his leadership. He scored runs in tough conditions and handled the pressure of captaincy with maturity. That showed his class and his ability to bat long.”
Gill was handed Test captaincy ahead of India’s tour of England, which was his first assignment as skipper. Under his leadership, India secured a 2-2 draw in the five-match series. Apart from his captaincy Gill also impressed with the bat, finishing as the highest run-scorer, with 754 runs in 10 innings at an average of 75.40. During the series, he registered four centuries and played a key role in India’s success.
Ashwin also credited Gill’s technical improvement and believes it will help him dominate on his home ground. “He has worked hard on his technique, especially keeping his bat close to the pads, which helped him reduce the gap between bat and pad, making him more solid against the moving ball,” Ashwin explained. “Yes, he hasn’t fired with the bat yet on home soil as captain, but with this change in his batting technique, I expect him to go all guns blazing at home too. His success in Test cricket will play a big role in redefining India’s Test team. He is the kind of player who can lead the batting line-up for years to come.”
Gill is now set to lead India in the one-off Test against Afghanistan starting on June 6 at New Chandigarh.
