The Government of India has announced a landmark initiative to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility by rolling out a 100% subsidy for setting up EV charging infrastructure under the newly launched PM E-Drive scheme. The move is aimed at overcoming one of the biggest hurdles in the electric vehicle ecosystem—availability of affordable and accessible charging stations.
The scheme, designed to align with India’s broader climate and energy goals, seeks to encourage both private and public sector participation in expanding the national charging network. By covering the full cost of charging infrastructure, the government hopes to eliminate the financial burden on entrepreneurs, start-ups, and state transport utilities who wish to invest in the sector.
Officials highlighted that the subsidy will apply to installation, equipment, and initial operational expenses, ensuring that both urban centers and semi-urban areas benefit from the transition. Priority will be given to highways, residential societies, commercial hubs, and public parking zones to create a robust and reliable charging grid across the country.
The PM E-Drive initiative is also expected to boost employment opportunities in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance of EV infrastructure. Industry experts believe this subsidy will accelerate demand for EVs by addressing range anxiety, one of the key concerns among potential buyers.
In addition to the subsidy, the government is working on setting technical standards for interoperability, digital payment integration, and renewable energy linkages to ensure the charging network is sustainable, user-friendly, and future-ready.
With India aiming to significantly reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and cut carbon emissions, this bold step is being seen as a catalyst for transforming the transport sector. The 100% subsidy under PM E-Drive not only promises cleaner mobility but also positions India as a leader in adopting large-scale green technology solutions.
