Gavaskar pushes for ban on players who feign injury during IPL season

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has urged the BCCI to enforce stricter rules on overseas players and ban those who are not being picked regularly, feign injury, return home, and then play domestic cricket while the IPL is still ongoing.

Gavaskar has long advocated the idea of banning overseas players who, for whatever reason, fail to fulfil their IPL commitments. The BCCI’s new regulation states that a player who registers for the auction and then makes themselves unavailable after being purchased will be banned from the tournament and the auction for two seasons, unless the absence is due to an injury or medical condition verified by their home board.

The ex-India opener wants the stakeholders to further strengthen the regulations.

“The BCCI’s ban for two years on those who enter the auction and, after being picked, then withdraw at the last moment, not because of injury but to earn brownie points with their local media, is another good move. They should also ban those who come to the IPL and, when they find they aren’t being picked regularly, feign injury, return home, and then play domestic cricket even while the IPL is still going on,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

“Plenty of overseas players take the IPL for granted and sometimes, in connivance with their boards, make some excuse and fail to play the full tournament, despite having agreed to do so before entering the auction. The franchise cannot go running around looking for a replacement at such a late stage and therefore has no option but to wait for the Board to release the player,” he added.

In the last IPL season, a few overseas players joined their squads late, while some returned home citing injury concerns. Considering everything that happened during the tournament, Gavaskar has now put forward his suggestions to the Board.
