As the Asian Games draw closer, Parveen Hooda is preparing for a fresh chapter in her boxing career. Born in Rurki village in Haryana’s Rohtak district, she started with limited resources but gradually worked her way onto the international stage.
Overview
Parveen was born on April 15, 2000. Her introduction to boxing came in 2011, when village sarpanch Sudhir Hooda started a handball and boxing academy in Rurki.
Inspired by Mary Kom and Vijender Singh, Parveen took to boxing. What began as an opportunity to channel her competitive side soon became a serious pursuit.
Her breakthrough came in 2019, when she defeated experienced boxer Sarita Devi in the domestic trials. Later that year, she won gold at the South Asian Games in Nepal.
Parveen continued to make her mark in the 63kg category. She became the national champion in 2021 before winning bronze at the 2022 World Championships in Turkey. Later that year, she added Asian Championship gold in Jordan.
At the 2023 Asian Games, competing at 57kg, Parveen reached the semifinal and secured an Olympic quota for Paris 2024. She beat Uzbekistan’s Sitora Turdibekova 5–0 in the quarterfinal before losing to Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yu-ting in the semifinal.
Her Olympic hopes were later disrupted by a suspension following whereabouts failures, which also resulted in India losing the quota she had secured.
