Rohit Sharma received the Padma Shri from President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Tuesday, joining 64 other awardees honoured during the second Civil Investiture Ceremony. The 39-year-old was recognised for his services to Indian cricket.
The date carries special significance for the former India captain.
On June 23, 2007, Rohit made his international debut for India in an ODI against Ireland in Belfast. Nineteen years later, on the same date, he stood at Rashtrapati Bhavan to receive one of the country’s most prestigious civilian honours.
Joining Rohit among the Padma award recipients were former India women’s hockey captain Savita Punia, while Vijay Amritraj was conferred with the Padma Bhushan.
