Nearly two decades after an unforgettable photograph brought them together, Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal are preparing to meet on football’s biggest stage.
Ahead of Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, Messi reflected on the now-famous image of him holding and bathing a baby Yamal during a UNICEF charity photoshoot in Barcelona. Speaking to NFL legend Tom Brady during Fanatics Fest, the Argentine admitted that the full-circle moment still feels surreal.
“That picture with Lamine, now we are facing in a final after a photo was taken when he was a baby. It’s just insane,” Messi said.
The photograph was taken almost 20 years ago by photographer Joan Monfort during a charity calendar shoot. At the time, Messi was only beginning to establish himself at Barcelona, while Yamal was an infant with no connection to professional football beyond the photoshoot. Few could have imagined that one day they would share the pitch in a World Cup final.
The meeting on Sunday also carries a symbolic passing-of-the-torch narrative. Messi has defined an era in world football, while Yamal has rapidly emerged as one of the brightest young stars in the game. Like Messi, the Spanish teenager came through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy and has already become a key figure for both club and country.
Despite the admiration, Messi made it clear there will be no room for sentiment once the match begins.
The Argentina captain praised Yamal’s rise and said he has followed the youngster’s development closely because of their shared connection with Barcelona.
“Lamine is truly amazing. I’ve followed him a lot because he plays for a club I love so much. He has a chance to achieve something historic, but we’re going to try to make sure that doesn’t happen this time,” Messi said at Fanatics Fest.
History awaits both players in New York.
Messi is one victory away from becoming the first captain to lead his country to consecutive FIFA World Cup titles. Yamal, meanwhile, could become one of the youngest players ever to start and win a World Cup final.
For Messi, though, the objective remains simple.
“We’ll try to put on a good match, but I hope he and his team don’t put on a good one,” he said with a smile.
On Sunday, an image that once captured the beginning of one football journey will be followed by another that could define the legacy of two generations.
