Japanese football fans once again earned global admiration after cleaning up their section of Dallas Stadium following Japan’s 2–2 draw with the Netherlands at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Their gesture once again grabbed headlines and drew praise from supporters around the world.
After the match, nearly 70,000 spectators left the venue, but Japanese fans stayed behind carrying large plastic bags. They were seen collecting bottles, food wrappers and other litter left in the stands before heading home.
Experts believe this habit stems from values taught from an early age. In 2018, Scott North, a professor of sociology at Osaka University, explained the reason behind it in an interview with the BBC.
“Cleaning up after football matches is an extension of basic behaviours that are taught in school, where children clean their classrooms and hallways,” he explained. “With constant reminders throughout childhood, these behaviours become habits for much of the population.”
The visuals of the clean-up went viral on social media, with many people applauding the fans for their discipline and culture.
The gesture is not new for Japanese supporters, who have built a reputation for cleaning stadiums after major sporting events over many years. Similar scenes were witnessed during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022, when Japanese fans cleared the stands after matches.
