Spain almost found the breakthrough before the interval in extra time when Mikel Merino glanced a free header wide from close range, a miss that briefly suggested penalties might still decide the final.
Instead, the decisive moment arrived just after the restart.
Pedro Porro delivered an inviting cross towards the far post, where Nico Williams kept the move alive with a clever header back into the danger area. Torres reacted quickest, smashing an emphatic finish into the roof of the net to finally beat Martinez after more than 100 minutes of frustration.
Argentina attempted to summon one final response but rarely threatened Unai Simon’s goal, who finished the tournament with seven clean sheets. Reduced to 10 men and having spent almost the entire contest defending, Scaloni’s side could not produce the late escape that had become a hallmark of their tournament.
Spain comfortably managed the closing stages to seal a deserved victory and reclaim the World Cup for the first time since 2010.
It was not a final remembered for flowing football or attacking brilliance. Instead, it became a battle of patience, control and persistence. Spain’s relentless pressure eventually broke down an exhausted Argentine side, with Torres’ extra-time strike ensuring La Roja finished the tournament as world champions once again.
