A FedEx cargo plane was forced to make an emergency landing shortly after taking off from Newark Liberty International Airport on Saturday morning after a bird strike caused its right engine to catch fire, according to reports.

Video footage captured the Boeing 767-3S2F returning to the airport just minutes after takeoff, with flames visible from its right engine around 8:00 AM (local time). Emergency crews at Port Authority of New York and New Jersey swiftly responded, with two fire trucks positioned near the runway as the plane landed. The firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, ensuring that no one on board was harmed.
The aircraft landed safely at 8:07 AM, just nine minutes after departure. While air traffic was briefly halted as a precaution, normal operations resumed shortly afterward.
Following the incident, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced an official investigation into the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage. Despite the emergency landing, the plane was cleared to resume its journey to Indiana at 9:30 AM, according to FlightAware.

This emergency landing comes amid a series of aviation incidents in recent weeks that have raised concerns about air safety. On February 25, a Southwest Airlines plane narrowly avoided a runway collision at Chicago Midway Airport when a private jet mistakenly rolled across the runway. On February 24, a Delta Air Lines flight was forced to return to Atlanta after haze and smoke filled the cabin—the second such incident in two days.
Earlier in February, 67 people lost their lives in a tragic midair collision between a Black Hawk helicopter and a commercial flight, carrying young figure skaters and their parents.
