Pakistan captain Fatima Sana has become the first Pakistani woman cricketer to be signed by a franchise in The Hundred. The seam-bowling all-rounder was selected by Birmingham Phoenix in the wildcard draft after Australia’s Lucy Hamilton withdrew from the competition to manage her workload.
Fatima earned her contract following a series of consistent performances for Pakistan in international cricket. She recently contributed with both bat and ball against South Africa in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Birmingham, scoring an unbeaten 55 off 38 balls. She also claimed three wickets in the match.
Speaking about the signing, Birmingham Phoenix Performance Director James Thomas said: “In the women’s team, signing Fatima Sana is a real statement of intent. She is Pakistan’s captain, an international-class pace bowler, and a brilliant replacement for Lucy Hamilton, who is unavailable due to her Australia commitments,” as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Fatima has filled Phoenix’s fourth overseas spot in the squad. She has been signed for £15,000. Her availability will depend on Pakistan’s tour of Sri Lanka, which runs from July 23 to August 4 and clashes with The Hundred.
She will also become the third Pakistani player to feature in The Hundred this season. Usman Tariq and Abrar Ahmed have secured contracts in the men’s competition. The tournament is scheduled to take place from July 21 to August 16.
