The family of a youth from Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh, who was recently detained for alleged links with the Islamic State (ISIS), has appealed for a fair and transparent investigation. The suspect, identified as a 28-year-old resident of the Kairana area, was taken into custody last week during a joint operation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and state police.
According to sources, the accused was under surveillance for several months over suspected online communication with ISIS handlers and possible involvement in recruiting individuals for extremist activities. Officials claim that digital evidence was recovered during raids at his residence, including encrypted messages and foreign contacts linked to radical networks.
However, the suspect’s family has rejected these allegations, maintaining that he is innocent and has no connection with any terror organization. They asserted that he is being targeted due to mistaken identity and urged authorities to conduct an impartial probe based on facts rather than suspicion.
Community leaders in the area have echoed similar sentiments, requesting that investigative agencies ensure due process is followed and no communal narrative is attached to the case. The NIA, meanwhile, stated that the investigation is at a preliminary stage and that all evidence will be examined thoroughly before filing charges.
The case has once again drawn attention to the delicate balance between national security measures and the protection of individual rights amid rising concerns over radicalization in some regions of Uttar Pradesh.
