Does July 3, 1990, ring a bell?
As things stand, Erling Haaland will lead Norway into their World Cup quarterfinal against England at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on July 11. But as the match approaches, there are striking similarities with an incident that unfolded 36 years ago.
Back then, the stage was Naples.
Italy were hosting the 1990 FIFA World Cup, and Argentina found themselves facing the hosts in the semifinal at the Stadio San Paolo, now renamed the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
For Maradona, it was an impossible situation.
In Naples, he was more than a footballer. He was an icon who had transformed Napoli into champions and given the city an identity it had long craved. The local fans adored him, but on that night, their country stood on the opposite side. Should they support Italy or the man they worshipped every weekend?
Maradona himself was equally conflicted. Defeating Italy would mean breaking the hearts of the people who had embraced him as one of their own.
The match ended 1-1 before Argentina prevailed on penalties to reach the final. Italy’s elimination on home soil left deep scars, and Maradona’s relationship with many Italian supporters changed forever. He was branded a traitor by sections of the public despite everything he had done for Naples.
Three-and-a-half decades later, Haaland finds himself in a situation that is not entirely different.
England fans have already begun joking that the goal machine they helped shape in the Premier League is now coming back to end their World Cup dream.
Haaland has largely brushed off the discussion, but there is an understanding that a Norway victory could make his return to Manchester a little more awkward. Manchester City supporters adore him, but on Friday he will be trying to eliminate their national team.
According to people close to the Norway camp, Haaland has even joked with his City teammates that if Norway beat England, they can all meet on Miami Beach afterwards.
The joke may have drawn smiles, but the challenge is a serious one.
Since England’s World Cup triumph in 1966, every tournament has begun with renewed hope that football would finally “come home.” Yet the trophy has continued to elude them.
Now, standing between England and another step towards that dream is a striker who has made a career out of tormenting Premier League defenders.
Haaland knows John Stones, Kyle Walker and Phil Foden better than most. He trains with them for much of the year and understands their strengths and weaknesses. They know his game just as well. That familiarity adds another layer to one of the tournament’s biggest quarterfinals.
Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken appears determined to keep his star striker focused. It is understood he has spoken privately with Haaland, urging him to treat the game as just another quarterfinal rather than becoming distracted by the emotions surrounding the occasion.
Haaland has already scored seven goals at this World Cup, trailing Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the race for the Golden Boot. Another goal against England would strengthen his chances of finishing as the tournament’s top scorer.
The striker, however, insists individual awards are the last thing on his mind.
“As a child, I always dreamed of playing in a World Cup for Norway,” Haaland said. “I never imagined we would come this far. Reaching the quarterfinals after beating Brazil for the first time in our history still feels unreal. Sometimes I have to remind myself that I’m not dreaming.”
Miami had earlier been Portugal’s base during the tournament before Cristiano Ronaldo’s side bowed out. The city has since lost one of its biggest stars.
If Haaland can lead Norway past England, could Miami soon be filled with Norwegian flags and giant cut-outs of their new hero?
For now, the Norwegian striker simply smiles.
At this World Cup, alongside Messi and Mbappe, Haaland has firmly established himself as one of football’s biggest attractions.
