Issy Wong’s first international five-wicket haul made the headlines as England defeated Ireland by six wickets in Derby, successfully chasing down a target of 166. After bowling out the visitors for 165 in 47 overs, the home side completed the chase with 27 overs to spare to seal the ongoing three-match ODI series with an unassailable 2-0 lead.
Playing only her sixth ODI, Wong registered her career-best figures of 5/33 as she rattled the Irish batting order. Among her five wickets, the dismissal of Ireland captain Gaby Lewis stood out. A scrambled-seam delivery nipped back and went straight through the gate to hit the leg stump, leaving Lewis completely clueless.
Interestingly, Wong’s figures are now the third-best by an England bowler in a WODI against Ireland:

During the chase, Maia Bouchier, who had scored a century in the first ODI, provided another stable start, scoring 45 off 31 balls and adding 54 runs for the opening wicket with Sophia Dunkley.
England lost a few wickets in the middle, but a quickfire unbeaten 47-run partnership between Freya Kemp (29* off 32) and Dani Gibson (36* off 22) for the fifth wicket sealed a comprehensive win for Charlie Dean’s side.
Player of the Match Wong was pleased with her spell at the post-match presentation, saying: “Really pleased, good to get over the line as well. Really satisfying. It’s about doing what the team needs from me, trying to hit the stumps and using my wobble seam.”
The final game of the series is set to be played in Worcester on September 6.
