India picked up four wickets despite conceding 116 runs in the first session on Day 2 of the historic first-ever Women’s Test at Lord’s against England.
Resuming on 21/1, England began the day with Maia Bouchier and Heather Knight at the crease. However, India’s seamers executed their plans brilliantly to rattle the hosts with three quick wickets.
Kranti Gaud added two more wickets to her overnight tally to make it three, while Sayali Satghare joined the party with the crucial wicket of Knight. Kranti first induced an outside edge from Bouchier with a delivery that moved away, and Yastika Bhatia completed a simple catch behind the stumps. Soon afterwards, Sayali trapped Knight lbw with an incoming delivery. England reviewed the decision, but replays showed the ball clipping the stumps, ending Knight’s 25-ball stay for six.
Kranti then dismissed debutant Alice Capsey with a superb delivery. She bowled it full, got it to swing away just enough to beat the outside edge, and crash into the off stump. England slipped from 32/1 to 47/4 in the blink of an eye, with India firmly on top.
Amy Jones then joined captain Nat Sciver-Brunt at the crease, and the pair steadied the innings. While Sciver-Brunt anchored one end, Jones adopted the attacking approach. They handled the Indian spinners well and kept the scoreboard moving.
Jones brought up her half-century, and England appeared to have regained the momentum heading into lunch. However, Sneh Rana provided the much-needed breakthrough by dismissing Jones for 52. Jones inside-edged the ball, and Richa Ghosh completed a simple catch at short leg.
Mady Villiers joined her captain for the final two overs before lunch. England will now rely heavily on Sciver-Brunt in the second session, while India will look to wrap up the remaining wickets as quickly as possible.
