India’s newly appointed T20I captain, Shreyas Iyer, admitted his side lost momentum as England sealed a four-wicket win in the second T20I in Manchester on Saturday. The defeat was India’s third consecutive loss under his leadership.
During the post-match presentation, Shreyas reflected on where India lost the match. “I know where it all went away, but I don’t want to pinpoint any particular player,” he said. “After the 15th over, momentum went away…I think one [Ravi Bishnoi] no-ball, I think he’ll come back stronger. Then the game got away in the 17th over… he’ll have to learn.”
Batting first, India posted a competitive 190/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Abhishek Sharma scored 43, Ishan Kishan made 49, while Shreyas contributed 37 to help India finish just short of the 200-run mark.
Speaking about India’s batting performance and England’s chase, Shreyas added: “It was a phenomenal score on this track. Tilak’s phenomenal 20 in the final over. Credit where it’s due: watching Bethell, he definitely took on the bowlers. I think Sam Curran analysed the dimensions of the ground early on and did not give room to our left-handers. The batters are strong on the leg side, and he was not letting them play there.”
While defending 191, India struck early and removed both England openers. However, Jacob Bethell’s unbeaten 76 guided England to a comfortable victory inside 19 overs.
The captain also praised Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who made his highly anticipated debut at Old Trafford. “I think he’s got that unflinching attitude,” said Shreyas. “It’s just sensational to watch. I wasn’t anticipating him to be nervous. Sensational cricket over the last couple of months and years. He definitely stepped up to the occasion. Pleasing to the eye.”
Both sides will now move to Nottingham for the third T20I on 7 July.
