Election Row in Bihar: Union Minister Lalan Singh Accused of Voter Intimidation

Published:

A political storm has erupted in Bihar after Union Minister and Janata Dal (United) leader Lalan Singh allegedly urged his supporters to restrict the movement of selective opponents on polling day. Speaking at a public gathering in Mokama on November 3, just days ahead of the state’s assembly elections beginning on November 6, Singh reportedly told his supporters to “keep certain people from leaving their homes” and, if needed, “escort them to cast their votes.”

The remarks, caught on video, rapidly circulated across social media platforms, triggering outrage among opposition parties and citizens alike. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress sharply criticized Singh’s comments, accusing the Union Minister of voter suppression and intimidation, especially targeting the poor and marginalized communities in the region.

Leaders of the opposition parties argued that Singh’s speech undermined democratic norms and violated the Model Code of Conduct. Several activists and commentators expressed concern, labeling the statement as a threat to free and fair elections.

Responding swiftly to the incident, the Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a formal notice to Lalan Singh on November 4, seeking an explanation within 24 hours. The notice directed the Union Minister to clarify his remarks and to explain why action should not be taken for violating electoral guidelines.

As the matter gains political traction, the incident is likely to fuel further debates over the conduct of political leaders during election campaigns and the enforcement of election laws in the country. The ruling coalition, of which Singh’s JD(U) is a key component, has yet to issue an official statement on the controversy.

With elections just around the corner, the episode has added yet another layer of tension to an already high-stakes political battle in Bihar.
