Death Toll Rises to 36 in Uttarakhand Bus Accident

Almora, 4th Nov. The death toll from the bus accident in Uttarakhand’s Almora district has tragically risen to 36. The incident occurred this morning when a 45-seater passenger bus plunged into a 200-meter-deep gorge at Marchula while traveling from Pauri in Garhwal to Ramnagar in Kumaon. The bus was approximately 35 kilometers away from its destination, Rampur, at the time of the accident.

Authorities report that the accident took place around 8:25 AM, with local residents from nearby villages serving as the first responders. While many passengers lost their lives at the scene, at least nine others succumbed to their injuries after being transported to local hospitals. Three critically injured passengers have been airlifted and are being taken to AIIMS for advanced medical treatment.

The bus, operated by the Garhwal Motor Owners’ Union, is under investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Officials from both Almora and Ramnagar are present at the accident site, coordinating the rescue efforts.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his condolences and announced that the district administration has been instructed to expedite the rescue operations. “I received very sad news of casualties of passengers in the unfortunate bus accident that took place in Marchula of Almora district,” he stated on X. He emphasized the importance of swiftly evacuating the injured and transporting them to the nearest health center for treatment. Additionally, he mentioned that serious cases would be airlifted if necessary.

In response to the tragedy, the Chief Minister has directed the suspension of Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials in the area and announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives, along with ₹1 lakh for the injured. A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered to investigate the incident thoroughly.
