India’s Chanambam Rishikanta Singh claimed the men’s 60kg weightlifting silver medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday, producing a record-breaking performance in the snatch event.
The Manipur lifter delivered a composed display throughout the competition, setting the tone in the snatch with three successful lifts. Rishikanta comfortably cleared 116kg in his opening attempt before lifting in 119kg in his second lift. With more confidence he opted for 121kg in his final attempt and executed it flawlessly, breaking the previous Commonwealth Games snatch record of 120kg. Malaysia’s Aniq Kasdan later matched the 121kg lift in the snatch round setting up an intense battle in the clean and jerk.
In the clean and jerk round, Rishikanta opened with a successful 143kg lift. He then attempted 148kg in his second attempt but failed to complete it which allowed Kasdan to take a lead after he successfully lifted 145kg and then 149kg. In the third attempt, Rishikanta again failed to lift 151kg to finish with a total of 264 points and claim the silver.
His performance marked a memorable return to the Commonwealth Games after making his debut at the Birmingham 2022 Games in the men’s 55kg category.
Competing in the revised 60kg division in Glasgow, Rishikanta arrived as one of India’s strongest medal hopes. Before his Glasgow triumph, he won gold at the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad where he registered a national record total of 271kg (120kg snatch + 151kg clean and jerk) to qualify directly for the Commonwealth Games. He also finished 11th in the men’s 60kg event at the 2025 World Weightlifting Championships after lifting a total of 269kg.
He did his training under the Indian Army’s sporting programme and now Rishikanta has established himself as one of India’s most dependable lightweight lifters.
The Commonwealth Games gold is the biggest achievement of his career so far, with his record-breaking 121kg snatch standing out as one of the defining performances of the weightlifting competition in Glasgow.
