Following another action-packed day at the Commonwealth Games on July 26, India will look to continue its campaign on Monday, July 27, with athletes competing across athletics, swimming, boxing, weightlifting, artistic gymnastics, wheelchair basketball, bowls and para athletics. The Indian contingent will be in action in seven medal events, with realistic podium hopes in several disciplines.
The athletics programme will see Gurindervir Singh begin his men’s 100m campaign, while Murali Sreeshankar and Lokesh Satyanathan compete in the men’s long jump qualification. Tejas Shirse will also take to the track in the men’s 110m hurdles heats, aiming to secure a place in the final later in the day. The highlight of the athletics schedule, however, will be the men’s high jump final, where Tejaswin Shankar, Sarvesh Anil Kushare and J Aadarsh Ram will all be in contention for medals.
In the pool, Sajan Prakash will represent India in the men’s 200m butterfly, hoping to progress through the heats and challenge for a place in the final.
India’s boxing contingent will have a busy day as Sachin Siwach, Ankush, Sakshi Choudhary and Sumit Kundu all begin their Round of 16 campaigns, looking to move a step closer to the medal rounds.
Weightlifting is expected to be one of India’s strongest medal prospects once again, with Gyaneshwari Yadav, Bindyarani Devi and V Ajaya Babu all competing in their respective finals.
Another medal opportunity will come in artistic gymnastics, where Protistha Samanta will compete in the women’s vault final after an impressive showing earlier in the competition.
Elsewhere, the Indian women’s wheelchair basketball 3×3 team will face Nigeria in the group stage, while Putul Sonowal will continue India’s campaign in bowls in the men’s singles.
India’s para athletes will also be chasing medals, with Sharmila Dhankar and Shilpa K Shyla competing in the women’s shot put F57 final, while Rakeshbhai Bhatt and Shreyansh Trivedi will feature in the men’s 100m T38 final.
With seven medal events on the schedule, Monday promises to be another crucial day for India. Weightlifting, the men’s high jump, artistic gymnastics and para athletics are expected to offer the country’s best opportunities to add to its Commonwealth Games medal tally.
