Cabo Verde’s World Cup journey is over, but when the dust settles and the songs of praise give way to silence, the players will realise they have achieved something extraordinary. They illuminated the tournament with their verve, strength of purpose and quality, and bowed out only after pushing reigning champions Argentina to the very limit.

They held three former world champions — Spain, Uruguay and Argentina — before eventually succumbing to a deflected goal in extra time. More than the result, however, the world will remember that this was not an underdog content merely to defend or cling on for a fortunate draw. Cabo Verde played with courage, conviction and ambition.

They troubled Argentina throughout the night, and Lionel Messi’s expression at the final whistle revealed just how demanding the contest had been before his side edged past the tiny island nation.

Déroy Duarte, who scored the first equaliser, plays his club football for Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad, one of the regular participants in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds. Sidney Lopes Cabral, whose superb strike restored parity in extra time, has just completed a move from Benfica to Trabzonspor in Turkey.

Neither was a household name before this tournament, nor was their well-travelled goalkeeper, Vozinha, who has played in countries as varied as Moldova and Slovakia. Yet this performance — together with their display against Spain in the group stage — has ensured these names will be remembered, much like those of Pak Doo-ik and his North Korean team-mates from 1966, who stunned Italy at Ayresome Park before giving Portugal a mighty scare in the quarter-finals.

On that occasion, it was the genius of Eusébio that dragged Portugal back from 3-0 down to win 5-3. Here, it was unquestionably the brilliance of Messi that proved decisive — first with an impeccable piece of control and finishing to give Argentina the lead, and then with the precise corner kick that created the winning goal late in extra time.

No one expected this result. But it could be the wake-up call Argentina need for the remainder of the tournament. In 2022, they recovered from a shock opening defeat to Saudi Arabia to lift the World Cup. This Cabo Verde scare should ensure there is absolutely no room for complacency from here on.

As for Cabo Verde and their players, they depart with their heads held high. In a world where attention is often lavished on empty spectacles and fleeting viral moments, their courage, skill and unwavering belief offered a reminder of what genuine sporting heroism looks like. Cabo Verde showed it in abundance, and their story will endure long after this tournament ends.
