Day 1 of the BWF World Championships started on a smooth note. No langurs, no pigeon droppings, and the entry was clean and hassle-free.
The venue is full of greenery and, while walking towards the hall, you genuinely feel like you are walking through a park.
Before entering the hall, fans have to show their tickets at the gate. There are four different gates — General, Premium General, Silver and Gold — for easy entry. Bands are also provided to the fans.
The lobby has different games to keep the fans occupied before they enter the hall.
The crowd was not very large at the beginning, as India’s first match was scheduled for 12:20 pm. The mascots were also around, shaking hands with fans, clicking pictures and entertaining them.
Some schoolchildren also arrived later. Their schools had brought them to watch the matches. As India’s first match drew closer, the seats started filling up and crowd management was handled nicely.
Once the Indian players started playing, the atmosphere changed. People were chanting, “India, India” and “Jeetega bhai jeetega, India jeetega”. There were whistles, claps and Indian flags all around whenever the Indians were on court.
The crowd going crazy for PV Sindhu was one of the most wholesome moments of the day. “PV Sindhu, PV Sindhu” chants echoed throughout the venue.
Ayush Shetty also received huge support from the fans. The crowd gave him a standing ovation and kept cheering him on throughout the match. “Come on Shetty, come on Shetty” and “India, India” chants continued from the stands. After winning, Ayush waved to the fans and also threw a shuttle into the crowd, making the moment even more special for everyone.
There was also a food court with four stalls, and quite a few options available.
