India’s top women’s doubles pair, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, have made a big jump in the latest BWF women’s doubles rankings after their historic bronze medal at the World Championships in New Delhi.
The star Indian duo have climbed 12 places, from World No. 39 to No. 27. It is the biggest rise among women’s doubles pairs inside the top 50.
Treesa and Gayatri produced a memorable run at the World Championships, defeating several higher-ranked pairs on their way to the semi-finals. Their biggest win came in the quarter-finals, where they defeated China’s Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian in a tough battle, 16-21, 21-15, 21-13, to secure India’s first women’s doubles medal at the World Championships since Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa clinched bronze in 2011.
They also pushed the world No. 1 pair, Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning, hard in the semi-finals, winning the opening game before eventually losing 21-18, 13-21, 8-21.
Apart from women’s doubles, Lakshya Sen also moved up to 13th, while Ayush Shetty entered the top 20 in the men’s singles. PV Sindhu, on the other hand, slipped to 10th, while Unnati Hooda moved up to 25th. India’s star men’s doubles pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, continue to hold fifth position.
