Badminton World Federation (BWF) President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul praised India for hosting an amazing World Championships as New Delhi brought the curtains down on a memorable week of badminton.
The BWF World Championships returned to India after 17 long years, and the capital of India put on a strong show both on and off the court. The tournament brought together the world’s best players and attracted passionate Indian fans throughout the week.
Khunying Patama praised the Badminton Association of India, the Government of India, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Sports Authority of India, volunteers, technical officials, sponsors and partners for their respective roles in making the event a success.
She also praised the experience provided to players and teams, from transport and accommodation to the playing conditions.
“From the opening day to the final match, schedules held and the competition met the highest international standards,” Khunying Patama said in an official press release. “Behind every rally, our integrity work continued out of sight, as it must. Through our broadcasters, the drama of this week travelled into hundreds of millions of homes. The players came first, and it showed. Good hotels, reliable transport and facilities that allowed them to prepare in peace. Players and team officials praised our courts, our conditions and everything around them. That matters more than anything.”
However, the BWF President said the young fans who attended the championships would remain among her best memories. “One or two may return one day to collect a medal of their own.”
Khunying Patama also mentioned that the tournament was a massive boost for Indian badminton. “That is what a great host leaves behind. Not only a tournament, but a beginning.”
