VISAKHAPATNAM, 18th Aug: Commercial flight operations at Visakhapatnam Airport officially came to an end on Sunday night, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Andhra Pradesh’s aviation sector as services shifted to the newly commissioned Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram from Monday.
The transition follows a July 28 notification issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which directed that scheduled commercial operations at the Civil Enclave located within INS Dega would cease once the Bhogapuram airport became operational. The notification also transferred the airport code VTZ to the new airport.
The final scheduled commercial service from Visakhapatnam was IndiGo flight 6E 2018 to Delhi, which departed at 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, formally concluding decades of commercial aviation operations at the airport.
Authorities clarified that the Visakhapatnam Civil Enclave will continue to handle non-scheduled commercial flights, ensuring that the facility remains operational for designated aviation services.
For several decades, Visakhapatnam Airport served as a vital aviation gateway for the city and the wider Andhra Pradesh region, connecting passengers to major domestic destinations while supporting tourism, trade and economic growth.
Over the years, the airport witnessed multiple infrastructure upgrades, including terminal expansion, improved aircraft parking facilities, enhanced security systems, modern passenger-processing infrastructure, DigiYatra implementation, accessibility improvements and sustainability initiatives.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) acknowledged the contributions of airlines, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), ground-handling agencies, regulatory authorities, concessionaires and other stakeholders for ensuring safe and efficient airport operations over the years.
AAI also expressed gratitude to the Indian Navy for facilitating civil aviation operations at INS Dega and said coordination among all stakeholders would continue as non-scheduled operations remain at Visakhapatnam while commercial aviation activity shifts to Bhogapuram.
The commissioning of Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport is expected to significantly strengthen regional and international air connectivity, positioning Bhogapuram as Andhra Pradesh’s new commercial aviation hub.
