Bengaluru: A Bengaluru resident’s candid account of the city’s challenging rental market has struck a chord with social media users after detailing how two promising house deals fell through at the last minute for different reasons.
The resident, who shared the experience on Reddit, said they had been searching for a 2–3 BHK apartment with a budget of ₹40,000 per month, including maintenance, but struggled to find genuine rental options.
Owner backed out after receiving a higher offer
According to the post, the first rental appeared to be finalised, with the owner completing documentation and asking the tenant to move in immediately.
However, just three days before the scheduled move, the owner reportedly cancelled the agreement after receiving a higher rental offer.
“On a weekday, just three days before we were supposed to move in, we got a call. The owner had changed his mind because someone else was willing to pay more rent. Just like that,” the resident wrote.
The unexpected cancellation forced the tenant to return to their hometown while continuing the search for accommodation.
Second deal allegedly rejected over religion
The resident later found another apartment through a broker, but the agreement reportedly collapsed after the family decided not to rent the property based on the prospective tenant’s religion.
According to the post, the decision came after the family’s elders objected to the tenancy.
The resident clarified that the post was not intended to blame any community or trigger a religious debate, acknowledging that property owners have the right to choose tenants.
Forced to stay in a hotel
Unable to secure a home, the resident said they are currently staying in a hotel so they can continue attending work while spending evenings searching for rental accommodation.
The post has reignited discussions about Bengaluru’s competitive rental market, where rising demand, escalating rents and tenant selection practices continue to pose challenges for many newcomers and working professionals.
