Bengaluru, 24th June: A technical snag on Bengaluru Metro’s Purple Line during peak evening hours on Tuesday caused widespread disruption, leaving thousands of commuters stranded and triggering chaotic scenes across several stations in the city.
The disruption began around 6:30 pm after a technical fault was detected in a train at Cubbon Park Metro Station. The breakdown affected services on the Purple Line, one of Bengaluru’s busiest metro corridors connecting major residential and commercial areas, including the IT hub of Whitefield.
As train operations were halted, passengers were asked to deboard, resulting in overcrowding at metro stations and long queues for alternative modes of transport. Roads surrounding key stations witnessed heavy congestion as thousands of office-goers scrambled to find ways to return home.
Videos circulating on social media showed stranded commuters climbing onto lorries and trucks for rides, highlighting the scale of the disruption. Cab aggregators and auto-rickshaw services were reportedly overwhelmed by the sudden surge in demand, leaving many passengers with limited options.
The incident also sparked a political debate. Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya criticised the state government’s handling of urban infrastructure, posting on social media that Bengaluru represented “First-world tech talent. Third-world governance.”
He said metro disruptions had become increasingly frequent and that every major breakdown pushed the city’s transport network into chaos, leaving citizens stranded despite contributing significantly to the economy.
According to Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), partial services were later restored between MG Road and Whitefield, but commuters continued to face delays and overcrowding throughout the evening.
Metro officials said repair work continued overnight and the technical issue was completely resolved by 5 am on Wednesday. Normal train services across the Purple Line were subsequently restored.
The latest disruption has once again raised concerns over the reliability of Bengaluru’s public transport infrastructure, particularly during peak commuting hours when the metro serves as a lifeline for lakhs of daily passengers.
