Bengaluru, 24th Oct. The death toll from the building collapse in Bengaluru’s Babusapalya has increased to eight, with six more bodies recovered from the rubble during search and rescue efforts. The incident occurred on October 22 amid heavy rainfall, trapping 21 laborers from Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. Authorities continue their night-long rescue operations, involving the NDRF, SDRF, police, and fire services.
So far, the deceased include Mohamed Arman, Mohammed Sahil, Srian Kirupal, Solo Paswan, Manikantan, Sathyaraju, Tulasi Reddy, and Pulchan Yadav, while two more laborers, Gajendra and Elumalai, are still believed to be trapped. Seven others have been rescued and are receiving treatment at city hospitals.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences, announcing Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured, while Chief Minister Siddaramaiah declared Rs 5 lakh compensation for the bereaved families.
According to reports, the building was illegally constructed on ‘B’ kharab land without proper permits, and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had previously issued notices to stop the construction. Despite these warnings, the builder continued, with the entire structure now revealed to be unauthorized.
BBMP Assistant Executive Engineer Vinay K was suspended following the collapse, and an FIR was filed against the builder and those involved. Three arrests have been made, including the building’s owner Muniraju Reddy, his son Bhuvan Reddy, and contractor Muniyappa. Charges include culpable homicide and violations under the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita and BBMP Act.
Karnataka Lokayukta has initiated a suo motu investigation, with Justice BS Patil revealing severe negligence on the part of BBMP officials. His team found that the building had been under construction for two years without proper approvals or interventions, highlighting administrative lapses.
Justice BS Patil, after inspecting the site, said, “The construction had been ongoing for two years, yet BBMP officials took no action. These are our initial findings, and we are treating this matter seriously. All those responsible will be held accountable.”
Rescue operations are still ongoing as authorities work to recover the remaining individuals trapped beneath the debris.
