Guwahati, 17th Sept: Relentless rains over the past three days have unleashed a second wave of floods in Assam, claiming two lives and impacting more than 22,000 residents. Golaghat district remains the epicentre, with both reported fatalities and widespread inundation.
Several Brahmaputra tributaries—including the Dikhou, Disang, and Dhansiri—have crossed danger levels, while the Barak and Kushiyara rivers swell in southern Assam. Sudden water release from the Doyang Hydro Electric Project has worsened flooding in Golaghat, submerging large swathes of the district.
The National Disaster Response Force evacuated 381 people and 28 livestock, as five revenue circles—Golaghat, Khumtai, Morongi, Sarupathar, and Bokakhat—report severe damage. A total of 56 villages and 4,548 people are affected, with 15 relief camps now operational.
The first flood wave struck in late May and continued through June, leaving the state bracing for prolonged monsoon devastation.
