Guwahati, 24th Sept: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid an emotional tribute to the late cultural icon Zubeen Garg, stating that “Zubeen will live forever” in the hearts of Assam’s people. The CM highlighted Garg’s emotional resonance, rebellious spirit, and generosity, saying his music embraced Assam’s diversity, his bravado was legendary, and his kindness unmatched.
Garg was cremated with full state honours on Tuesday at Kamarkuchi on the outskirts of Guwahati, drawing thousands of fans and admirers. His final rites were performed by his sister Palme Borthakur, while his wife Garima Saikia was seen in tears. A gun salute was accorded as part of the state honours.
Hundreds of people gathered at the crematorium to pay their respects. CM Sarma offered floral tributes, writing on social media, “From now on, he will live in Assam’s soul, mind, and heart.” Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also paid his last respects.
Before the funeral, Garg’s remains were kept at Bhogesawar Baruah Sports Complex for public homage. The Assam government announced a three-day state mourning with no entertainment, ceremonial programs, or public celebrations.
The 52-year-old singer passed away in Singapore on Friday following a drowning incident while attending the Northeast India Festival. His body was flown to Delhi and then transported to Guwahati on Sunday morning.
Garg, fondly known as ‘Goldie’, was a multi-talented artist—singer, composer, music director, actor, and filmmaker. Over his three-decade career, he lent his voice to thousands of songs in Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, and other languages, and played 12 musical instruments, including the anandalahari, dhol, dotara, drums, guitar, harmonica, harmonium, mandolin, keyboard, and tabla.
