Indian gymnast Ariha Pangambam scripted history by becoming the first-ever Indian to win a gold medal in the senior women’s individual event at the Asian Aerobic Gymnastics Championships.
The 2026 Asian Aerobic Gymnastics Championships were held in Philippines from August 4-7, with Ariha’s gold coming on the final day of the competition.
The 22-year-old athlete finished on top of the standings with a final score of 19.100 to secure the continental title. Her overall score included 8.650 points for artistry, 7.600 for execution, and 2.850 for difficulty.
The victory came after years of narrow misses, as she previously registered consecutive fourth-place finishes at both the 2022 and 2024 Asian Championships.
When she competed at the 2024 Senior Asian Championships in Hanoi, she finished fourth in the women’s individual final with a score of 18.125, and she also represented India at the FIG Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships in the same year.
Ariha also posted on her LinkedIn account: “For me, gymnastics is more than a sport – it’s a way of life that teaches grace under pressure, beauty in movement, and strength in humility. My goal is to continue representing my country with pride and to inspire young athletes to chase their dreams with discipline, belief, and heart.”
The Gymnastics Federation of India President Sudhir Mital confirmed the milestone and wrote: “A great achievement for us. Did very well. Kudos to her and her coach.”
