Patna, 18th Sept: With just weeks to go before the Bihar Assembly elections, the political temperature in the state is already rising. Senior leaders from both the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition are making frequent visits to key constituencies in an effort to mobilize voters. Among them, Begusarai has emerged as a high-stakes hotspot, with all seven of its assembly seats witnessing intense political activity.
On Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached Begusarai to address a crucial workers’ convention at the IOC ground. Shah’s visit follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent tour of Bihar, during which he announced several major initiatives for the state. The BJP is pulling out all stops to ensure a stronghold in this politically significant region.
Opposition Strategy in Motion
Just a day earlier, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav had also arrived in Begusarai for a two-day visit. During his campaign stop in Hanspur village, Tejashwi is expected to induct former JD(U) MLA Narendra Kumar Singh, popularly known as Bogo Singh, into the RJD.
The move is seen as a strategic masterstroke by Tejashwi to weaken Nitish Kumar’s JD(U). Bogo Singh, considered one of the most influential leaders in Bihar politics, narrowly lost the last election to LJP candidate Rajkumar Singh, who later defected to the JD(U). His induction into the RJD could not only consolidate Yadav’s position in the region but also trigger political ripples across the Mahagathbandhan alliance.
Trouble Within the Grand Alliance
Bogo Singh’s entry, however, has not been without controversy. Both the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Congress have opposed his inclusion in the RJD, warning that it could disrupt the delicate balance within the Mahagathbandhan. If the RJD fields him from the Matihani constituency, it may cause rifts with allies and complicate seat-sharing arrangements.
Adding to the complexities, Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is also eyeing the same seat, making the electoral battle even more crowded. This could mirror the triangular fight seen in the last election, when CPM candidate Rajendra Singh lost narrowly despite strong support.
NDA Faces Internal Challenges Too
While the Opposition grapples with alliance friction, the NDA is not immune to its own troubles. JD(U)’s Rajkumar Singh, considered close to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is expected to contest again from Matihani. If Chirag Paswan insists on fielding an LJP candidate here, it could spark tension within the NDA, testing its unity ahead of the elections.
Amit Shah’s visit to Begusarai is therefore being viewed as crucial not only for energizing BJP’s cadre but also for ironing out potential NDA differences. Political observers suggest that both Shah and Tejashwi’s overlapping visits underscore Begusarai’s pivotal role in Bihar’s upcoming polls.
The Battle for Begusarai
Known historically as the “Leningrad of the East” for its strong leftist influence, Begusarai has now become the focal point of Bihar’s political chessboard. With both Amit Shah and Tejashwi Yadav rallying their forces here, the district is set to witness a high-decibel contest that could shape the larger electoral narrative of the state.
As campaign trails heat up, the simultaneous visits of two of Bihar’s most influential political players highlight the shifting dynamics and the fierce competition that lies ahead in the Assembly polls.
