Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has clarified that artificial intelligence (AI) is not responsible for the company’s recent layoffs, countering speculation that automation and AI-driven tools were replacing human roles within the tech giant.
Speaking during an earnings call, Jassy said the job reductions were part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at streamlining operations and reducing costs, not a direct consequence of AI adoption.
“Our recent workforce adjustments were driven by business priorities and long-term efficiency goals — not by AI replacing jobs,” Jassy stated. “In fact, AI is helping our employees become more productive, not redundant.”
Focus on Efficiency and Innovation
Amazon has implemented several restructuring rounds across divisions such as Prime Video, Alexa, and AWS, citing the need to align resources with evolving customer demand. The company emphasized that AI remains a strategic investment area, particularly in cloud computing, logistics, and retail optimization.
Jassy also noted that AI technologies are being used to assist employees, automate repetitive tasks, and improve service delivery — but not to eliminate essential human roles.
