All Eyes on Rohit: Lord’s Could Define the Next Chapter

The match is still going on, and India are fighting hard despite having posted a modest 233. But all the talk in the press box is about Rohit Sharma.

In fact, I started my pre-match show by saying the real point of interest in this game was Rohit and whether he could produce a big score. Another failure would only increase the pressure, making Lord’s a potentially defining moment. He batted poorly here, and it is now common sense that another failure at Lord’s could make his position untenable. With Yashasvi Jaiswal sitting out, it becomes increasingly difficult to justify leaving out someone who has scored two hundreds in his last three innings for a player who is neither scoring runs nor looking convincing at the crease.

It all boils down to Lord’s. Can Rohit make it count and score big? Can he use the time he spent in the middle in Cardiff to turn the clock back at Lord’s? Can he defy the odds and rediscover his best?

Was Rohit told before this tour that it would be his last series? Had that been the case, would he have agreed to play a three-match bilateral series knowing full well that he was no longer in the plans for the 2027 World Cup? Why would he want to carry on if there was no future for him beyond this?

Irrespective of the result, the story remains Rohit. Is Lord’s the last dance, or will it witness a remarkable resurrection? Can Rohit, one final time, make it count and change the narrative?

As I conclude this piece, Rohit is standing at short midwicket, looking towards the crowd. What could be going through his mind? Can he, or can he not?
