Aizawl FC’s journey in Indian football is set for a major change. The former I-League champions are all set to move their senior team’s Indian Football League (2nd Tier Competition in Indian Football) rights to Nagaland United, subject to approval from the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
For Aizawl, though, this is not a complete goodbye. Sporting director Pu Hmingthana confirmed that the club will continue to operate from Mizoram and take part in the Mizoram Premier League and other local tournaments. The club will also be rebranded as part of the change.
The proposed transfer concerns only Aizawl’s IFL rights. If approved, Nagaland United are expected to play their home matches in Dimapur, giving Nagaland a fresh opportunity to establish itself on the national football map.
For Aizawl supporters, however, the development is difficult to separate from the memories the club created over the past decade.
Founded in 1984, Aizawl FC became much more than a football club in Mizoram. The People’s Club became a symbol of what was possible for a club without the financial backing of the biggest teams in Indian football.
Their greatest moment came in 2017, when Aizawl won the I-League under Khalid Jamil. The story had all the ingredients of a sporting fairytale. A relatively modest club, without a star-studded squad or a massive budget, went up against the established names and won the country’s second-tier title.
In many ways, it was Indian football’s version of Leicester City’s Premier League triumph.
That success also had a wider impact. Aizawl’s rise helped put Mizoram firmly in the national football conversation. More young Mizo players began making their way into Indian football, and the club became an important part of that talent pathway.
Now, financial difficulties have made it difficult for Aizawl to continue its IFL operations. The uncertainty over the 2026-27 season adds another layer to the situation, with the league scheduled to begin on October 16.
At the same time, Nagaland United’s proposed entry offers a completely different emotion. For Nagaland football, it could be the beginning of something new. A national-level team playing its home games in Dimapur could give local players and supporters a bigger platform and bring fresh attention to the state’s footballing ecosystem.
But for Mizoram, the loss of Aizawl’s presence in the IFL will still hurt.
Aizawl FC may continue playing in the MPL, but their departure from the national second-tier marks the end of an important chapter. The club showed that Indian football did not always have to be about money and big names. It could also be about belief, local talent and a team that refused to accept its place in the pecking order.
For Nagaland, this could be a new dawn. For Aizawl, it is an emotional change of course.
And Indian football, once again, is left wondering how clubs with history and identity can survive when the financial demands of the modern game become too heavy to carry.
