AIIMS Rishikesh Air Ambulance Crash-Lands Near Kedarnath; All Onboard Safe

Published:

AIIMS Rishikesh-operated air ambulance crash-landed near Kedarnath Dham during an emergency medical mission. The helicopter, carrying a pilot and two doctors, encountered a technical malfunction involving its tail rotor, necessitating an emergency landing. Despite the aircraft sustaining damage, all three individuals onboard escaped unharmed.

Incident Details

The air ambulance was dispatched to Kedarnath to evacuate a pilgrim suffering from respiratory distress. During the descent, the helicopter’s tail rotor failed, leading to a loss of balance. The pilot executed an emergency landing at the Kedarnath helipad, during which the rear section of the helicopter broke off. The swift action of the pilot prevented any injuries to those onboard.

Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the technical failure. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been notified and is expected to conduct a thorough inquiry.

Context and Safety Measures

Kedarnath, a prominent pilgrimage site in Uttarakhand, sees a significant influx of devotees during the Char Dham Yatra season. Helicopter services are commonly used to transport pilgrims, especially those requiring urgent medical attention, due to the region’s challenging terrain.

This incident highlights the importance of stringent safety protocols and regular maintenance checks for aircraft operating in high-altitude areas. Authorities are urged to review and enhance safety measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
