Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated a series of ₹632 crore Brahmaputra development projects in Guwahati, signaling a major push toward strengthening riverfront infrastructure and improving connectivity along one of India’s most important waterways.
The projects, implemented under multiple central schemes, include embankment upgrades, modern riverfront facilities, improved flood protection structures, and initiatives aimed at enhancing navigability on the Brahmaputra. Officials said the new infrastructure will help safeguard vulnerable areas, boost trade and tourism, and improve long-term regional resilience.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Sitharaman said the projects reflect the Centre’s commitment to accelerating development in the Northeast. She noted that the Brahmaputra’s unique geography demands sustainable and well-planned interventions, and emphasized that the newly launched works will support both economic growth and disaster preparedness.
The Finance Minister also reviewed ongoing river management programs and met with local stakeholders, stressing the importance of balancing ecological concerns with infrastructure expansion.
State leaders welcomed the initiatives, calling them a milestone for Assam’s future, especially as the region continues to face annual flood challenges. The projects are expected to be completed in phases over the next few years, with regular monitoring by central and state agencies.
