Published:

Introduction

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially announced the commencement of the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in 12 states across the country. This move aims to update and verify voter lists ahead of upcoming state and local body elections, ensuring that every eligible citizen is properly enrolled in the voters’ database.

The SSR process, also referred to as the Summary Inclusion and Revision (SIR) exercise, will enable new voters to register, existing voters to correct their details, and remove duplicate or deceased entries from the electoral roll.

States Covered Under the Announcement

According to the ECI’s statement, the 12 states where the revision will take place include:
Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Odisha, Telangana, Kerala, Punjab, Assam, Gujarat, and West Bengal.

The revision process will begin on November 1, 2025, with the final publication of electoral rolls scheduled for January 5, 2026.

Objective of the Special Summary Revision

The SSR is conducted annually by the Election Commission to:

  • Include new voters who have turned 18 years old as of January 1, 2026.

  • Allow corrections or updates in the name, address, or photograph of existing voters.

  • Delete ineligible entries due to death, duplication, or change of residence.

  • Ensure maximum participation and accuracy in voter rolls before major elections.

“The Commission’s goal is to achieve 100% purity of electoral rolls and ensure no eligible voter is left behind,” said an ECI spokesperson.
