Mamata Banerjee’s ‘Courtesy’ Visit To Injured MP, BJP’s ‘No Arrest’ Question

Published:

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit to an injured BJP Member of Parliament has stirred fresh political controversy in the state, with the Opposition questioning the government’s handling of the assault and the absence of any arrests. What was intended as a gesture of courtesy has now become a flashpoint in the ongoing TMC-BJP political tussle.

The incident in question involves a BJP MP who sustained serious injuries during a recent clash in North Bengal between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and BJP supporters. Following widespread outrage and calls for accountability, Mamata Banerjee visited the MP at a Kolkata hospital, describing her visit as “a humane act” and expressing concern for his recovery. “Political rivalry should not come in the way of humanity,” she reportedly said after meeting the injured leader.

However, the BJP was quick to question the Chief Minister’s sincerity, calling her hospital visit “political optics.” Party leaders alleged that despite the Chief Minister’s expression of sympathy, no concrete action has been taken against those responsible for the attack. “If the Chief Minister is truly concerned, why haven’t the attackers been arrested yet?” asked a senior BJP leader, adding that the law and order situation in Bengal has deteriorated sharply under the TMC government.

The BJP leadership has accused the state administration of shielding the perpetrators, claiming that police investigations are deliberately slow and biased. They argue that violence against opposition workers has become a recurring pattern in the state, especially ahead of elections. Several BJP MPs and MLAs have demanded an independent probe into the assault, alleging political interference in law enforcement.

In response, TMC leaders have defended the government’s handling of the case, stating that police investigations are ongoing and will lead to arrests based on evidence. They accused the BJP of exploiting the incident for political gain and attempting to malign the image of the Chief Minister. “Mamata Banerjee’s visit was a genuine gesture. The BJP’s attempt to politicize it shows their lack of empathy,” said a senior TMC spokesperson.

The episode has once again brought the spotlight back on Bengal’s fraught political landscape, where clashes between ruling and opposition workers continue to disrupt civic peace. Observers note that the Chief Minister’s visit was intended to project an image of compassion and leadership above party lines, but the sharp response from the BJP has turned it into a political confrontation.

As tensions escalate, questions over accountability, political violence, and the state’s law and order machinery remain at the forefront. The controversy underscores how even gestures of goodwill in Bengal’s charged political environment can quickly evolve into battles of perception — revealing the deep mistrust that continues to define relations between the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
