The Congress party on Sunday raised alarm over what it described as a “chilling death threat” to senior leader Rahul Gandhi, stating that the warning has deeply disturbed party members and supporters.
According to party officials, the threat message specifically mentioned that Gandhi “will be shot,” prompting the Congress leadership to demand immediate investigation and enhanced security for him. The party accused political opponents of creating a hostile environment where such threats are openly directed at national leaders, calling it a dangerous trend for democracy.
Congress spokespersons said that while differences in ideology and policy are natural in a democracy, resorting to intimidation and threats of violence against elected representatives crosses every boundary of decency and law. The party urged authorities to identify the source of the threat and ensure strict action against those responsible.
Rahul Gandhi, who has been actively addressing public meetings and campaigns across several states, has frequently been a target of political criticism. The party emphasized that threats to his life should not be underestimated given past incidents of violence against political leaders in India.
Senior Congress leaders also appealed to the Union government and law enforcement agencies to take the matter seriously, noting that protecting political leaders is vital for safeguarding democratic discourse in the country.
