Mirzapur, 24th Sept: Folk singer Saroj Sargam and her husband Ram Milan Bind have been arrested in Mirzapur for allegedly uploading a YouTube song containing derogatory remarks against Goddess Durga, police said on Wednesday.

Senior Superintendent of Police Somen Barma stated that the video, posted on September 19, sparked outrage among the Hindu community and prompted a formal complaint by Sub-Inspector Santosh Kumar Rai of Madihan police station. “Evidence confirmed the involvement of Saroj Sargam and her husband. Both were arrested,” Barma said in a video statement.

Police said Bind produced and directed the controversial video. Sargam’s YouTube channel, with over 60,000 subscribers, carries nearly 40 videos.

Authorities also discovered that Sargam had encroached on 15 bighas of forest land, which was cleared in a joint forest–police operation. Legal action is being pursued on the land issue as well.

The video drew strong criticism from religious leaders. Juna Akhara saint and Badrinath temple mahant Yoganand Giri demanded immediate arrest, warning of protests if action was delayed.
