Strict-most action sought over removal of heritage dedication plate at Gauri Shanker Temple, Chandni Chowk

It is with deep concern that I flag an alleged act of heritage erasure at the historic Gauri Shanker Temple, Chandni Chowk (110006). A stone dedication plate on the temple’s traditional water-hut (pyau)—bearing the names of my forebears, late Shri Bhikhimal ji and late Shri Mitthanlal ji—has reportedly been removed and replaced with the branding of a large corporate entity.

On 19.06.2025, I formally wrote to the temple authorities seeking restoration of the original name-plate reading “Bhikhimal Mitthanlal.” The letter was duly acknowledged and signed by the office (copy attached), yet there has been no response or corrective action till date.

Why this matters

Old Delhi’s pyaus are more than utility structures—they are living heritage and markers of community philanthropy. Many such water-huts across the walled city still retain their original stone plaques, honouring citizens who served the public good. Replacing these plaques for contemporary branding undermines cultural memory and sets a damaging precedent.

What must happen now

Immediate restoration of the original stone plate “Bhikhimal Mitthanlal” on the temple pyau.

  1. Transparent explanation from the temple management regarding the removal and replacement.
  2. Oversight by authorities—Delhi Government, MCD, and heritage bodies—to ensure safeguards for similar legacy assets citywide.
  3. Inventory & protection protocol for pyaus and commemorative plaques in Old Delhi, with penalties for unauthorized alterations.

This is not merely a question of family sentiment; it is a public-interest issue about respecting historical philanthropy and protecting Delhi’s tangible heritage. I urge the responsible authorities and temple management to act swiftly and set an example of cultural stewardship.
