Tiruppur, 12th Sept: DMK panchayat president Vinayagam Palaniswami has been arrested for allegedly murdering a man who exposed local irregularities by running his SUV over him, police said on Thursday.

According to investigators, the accused, a local body chief in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur district, fatally knocked down the victim, Palaniswami, while he was riding a two-wheeler. Officers revealed that the DMK leader was intoxicated at the time.

The case, initially treated as a hit-and-run, was upgraded to murder after the victim’s family alleged long-standing disputes with the panchayat head. “Palaniswami (the victim) had complained about a private road not being handed over to the panchayat. This appears to be the trigger. He had raised many other issues too,” a senior police officer said.

A local court has remanded Vinayagam Palaniswami to judicial custody as investigations continue.

The incident has sparked political heat, with the opposition blaming the ruling DMK for rising crime and deteriorating law and order. The state government and police have rejected these claims, asserting that Tamil Nadu maintains one of the lowest crime rates nationally and that stringent action is taken in all such cases.
