New Delhi, 9th September: In Bharatiya politics, Rahul Gandhi has often been mocked as a politician who creates more headlines with his mistakes than his achievements. His political journey, from fumbled speeches to sudden foreign vacations, has earned him the label of a “part-time politician.” Now, once again, controversy has caught up with him—this time not for a gaffe on stage or an ill-timed holiday, but because of a police notice linked to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF). The Jharsuguda police in Odisha have formally asked the foundation to furnish financial records in connection with an FIR filed against Gandhi for allegedly making anti-Bharat remarks earlier this year. What began as a fiery political speech has spiraled into a probe involving foreign funding, controversial donations, and questions about national security.
The Notice That Shook the Congress Legacy

On 3rd September, Jharsuguda police issued a notice to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, demanding detailed records of foreign contributions, bank accounts, signatories, and auditors. The foundation, chaired by Sonia Gandhi and with Rahul Gandhi as a board member, is now under scrutiny for donations it received since its inception in 1991. The order makes compliance mandatory, warning that refusal could invite legal action under Section 210 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The scope of the notice goes beyond routine queries. Police specifically want documents related to donations allegedly received from controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik in 2011 and $300,000 from the Chinese government during 2005–06. Questions have also been raised about whether funds from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund and the Ministry of Finance were diverted to the RGF during the UPA regime. For a foundation meant to focus on social causes, these allegations, if proven, could expose a disturbing misuse of influence.
Rahul Gandhi’s Speech: The Spark Behind the Fire

The case traces back to January 15, 2025, when Rahul Gandhi, while inaugurating the new Congress headquarters in Delhi, delivered yet another of his provocative speeches. In his address, he declared that the Congress was not merely fighting the BJP and RSS, but “fighting the Bharatiya state itself.” His exact words—“We are now fighting the BJP, the RSS and the Bharatiya state itself”—were enough to trigger outrage.
Hindu organisations and BJP leaders filed complaints, accusing Gandhi of inciting rebellion and undermining Bharat’s unity. Following a preliminary inquiry, Sambalpur Range IG Himanshu Lal found the charges credible, leading to an FIR under Sections 152 and 197(1)(d) of the BNS. These sections deal with attempts to incite secession and spreading misleading information threatening national integrity. What could have been brushed off as another instance of Rahul’s careless rhetoric has now transformed into a full-fledged legal case.
From Blunder to Investigation: The Expanding Probe

With the latest notice, police have expanded their lens beyond Gandhi’s controversial speech to examine the financial machinery of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. The probe touches not only Rahul Gandhi but also other high-profile members such as Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, P. Chidambaram, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, and Ashok Ganguly.
The allegations of Chinese and Zakir Naik-linked funding put the Congress in an especially uncomfortable position. Critics argue that the Gandhi family has long relied on foreign influence, and this investigation provides fresh ammunition to those questioning the party’s loyalty to national interests. For the BJP, the optics could not be better timed—painting Rahul Gandhi as a leader not only prone to political missteps but also linked, however indirectly, to questionable foreign money.
A Familiar Pattern of Irresponsibility

This episode reinforces the caricature of Rahul Gandhi as a leader who speaks without thinking and leaves his party to clean up the mess. Whether it was disappearing abroad during election campaigns, delaying crucial decisions, or making offhand remarks that snowball into controversies, Rahul Gandhi has built a reputation for irresponsibility. His critics now mockingly suggest that he is not merely a “part-time politician” but also a “full-time liability.”
Even within the Congress, murmurs are growing louder about the damage such controversies cause to the party’s already battered image. For a leader who aspires to challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi seems to repeatedly stumble at the very basics of political responsibility.
The Broader Implications

If the allegations of foreign donations and financial irregularities stand proven, the impact will go beyond Rahul Gandhi’s personal credibility. It will raise serious concerns about the governance practices during the UPA years and the influence of external actors on Bharatiya policy decisions. The Congress, already struggling to hold ground nationally, may find itself further cornered.
Moreover, the optics of a leader accused of making anti-national statements while also being linked to controversial foreign funding could alienate even the party’s traditional support base. For the BJP, this narrative strengthens its positioning as the sole guardian of nationalism against what it portrays as the Congress’s compromised politics.
The Politics of Self-Destruction

Rahul Gandhi’s political career increasingly appears to be a cycle of self-sabotage. At a time when Bharat’s opposition desperately needs strong, credible leadership, Gandhi continues to deliver ammunition to his critics through reckless remarks and questionable judgment. Instead of focusing on building a coherent strategy, he is seen perpetually firefighting scandals of his own making.
His January speech may have been an attempt to sound bold and defiant, but in reality, it exposed his lack of political maturity. Worse, it has now drawn the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation—a symbol of the family’s political legacy—into a legal storm. The consequences of this investigation may haunt not just Rahul Gandhi but the entire Congress establishment.
A Leader Who Trips Over His Own Words
In politics, words matter, and for Rahul Gandhi, they often come back like boomerangs. The Jharsuguda police notice has transformed a careless speech into a legal and financial minefield for the Congress. Once again, Rahul Gandhi stands accused not only of failing as a leader but also of endangering the credibility of his party and its institutions.
As the November deadline approaches for the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation to submit its records, the outcome of this case could shape the future of the Congress party. Whether this investigation uncovers wrongdoing or not, one thing is already clear: Rahul Gandhi’s political career continues to be defined less by vision and leadership and more by controversy and blunder.
