Bengaluru, 19th Aug: The Karnataka Assembly has passed a bill to rename Bengaluru City University as Dr. Manmohan Singh Bengaluru City University. The decision honors former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh for his crucial role in the development of Bengaluru.

The name change will be officially implemented across all records and documents under the Karnataka State Universities (Amendment) Act 2025. The move acknowledges Dr. Singh’s key contributions during his tenure, which saw Bengaluru emerge as a major technology hub.

During his time as Prime Minister, Dr. Singh laid the foundation for several key infrastructure projects, including the Bengaluru-Electronic City Elevated Highway in 2006. His government also contributed to the six-laning of the Bengaluru-Nelamangala NH4 and supported the initial development of the Bengaluru Metro, which is now a vital part of the city’s urban transport.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, who served as India’s 13th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, is a renowned economist known for his gentle demeanor. His leadership was pivotal in strengthening India’s economy and modernizing the nation through significant economic reforms and infrastructure development. The renaming of the university is seen as a tribute to his vision and efforts to transform Bengaluru into a modern metropolis.
