In a concerning revelation for Indian sports, the Union Sports Ministry informed the Rajya Sabha that 260 Indian athletes tested positive for banned substances in 2024, marking what could be the highest number of doping violations in the nation’s history.
The ministry reported that the number of samples collected for testing also saw a significant rise, reaching 7,466 during the year. Officials stated that the increased testing is part of stricter anti-doping measures and surveillance aimed at ensuring fair play and maintaining the integrity of sports in the country.
Experts point out that while the spike in numbers partly reflects more rigorous and widespread testing, it also underscores the persistent challenge of doping in Indian athletics, weightlifting, wrestling, and other competitive sports.
Sports analysts warn that such a high tally could harm India’s reputation on the global stage, particularly ahead of major international events. The ministry has reiterated its commitment to anti-doping education, athlete counseling, and tougher penalties for violators.
The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) is expected to intensify outreach programs at grassroots levels to spread awareness about the dangers and consequences of doping, with a renewed focus on young and emerging athletes.
