Tirumala, 12th July: In a major step toward future-proofing the world’s most visited pilgrimage destination, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has initiated an ambitious 40-year security master plan for the Tirumala temple, beginning with a comprehensive revamp of the Alipiri Checkpoint—the main gateway to the holy hills.

At a high-level meeting on Friday, TTD Executive Officer J Syamala Rao and Additional EO Ch Venkaiah Chowdary met with officials from Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to finalise both short-term and long-term security strategies. L&T’s expert team presented a blueprint featuring cutting-edge security upgrades, including high-capacity scanners, automated parking and traffic management systems, and an integrated surveillance network.
The proposed security revamp also includes:
- AI-enabled traffic enforcement (including no-helmet detection)
- Common alarm management system
- Centralised command and control centre
“Plans should cater to Tirumala’s security needs for the next four decades,” EO Rao emphasised during the meeting, urging L&T to deliver sustainable and scalable security solutions.
VIP Movement & Maoist Threat Shape Urgency
The temple town, which attracts 50,000 to over 1 lakh pilgrims daily, presents immense logistical and security challenges. The frequency of visits by VIPs and VVIPs amplifies the need for a robust yet seamless security apparatus that doesn’t hinder the common devotee’s experience.
The decision to fortify the Alipiri Checkpoint is especially significant given the 2003 Maoist attack on then-Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at the same location. The claymore mine blast, from which Naidu narrowly escaped, remains a stark reminder of past vulnerabilities.
Since then, security measures have gradually improved, but with the evolving threat landscape and swelling pilgrim numbers, the TTD is determined to future-proof Tirumala’s security for generations to come.
