New Delhi, 25th Oct. With the cyclonic storm Dana making landfall in Odisha and impacting West Bengal and other eastern coastal regions, the Congress party on Friday urged the central government to extend comprehensive support to affected states. They called for the deployment of all preventive and emergency measures to ensure public safety.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the landfall process of the severe cyclonic storm Dana was completed on Friday morning, taking at least eight and a half hours to enter the landmass. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge stated that Cyclone Dana’s landfall in Odisha and its repercussions in West Bengal highlight the need for utmost preparedness and swift action.
“The Union Government must extend comprehensive support to affected states, deploying all necessary preventive and emergency measures to ensure public safety,” Kharge emphasized in a post on X. He also appealed to all Congress workers to provide assistance to those in need.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi echoed these sentiments, urging the central government to offer full assistance to the affected states during this crisis. In a Facebook post in Hindi, he acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, saying, “The landfall of Cyclone Dana on the coast of Odisha, its impact on West Bengal and other eastern coastal states, and the warning issued by the meteorological department indicate the possibility of a serious natural disaster.”
Gandhi urged citizens in affected areas to keep themselves safe by following administrative guidelines. He stressed the need for the central government to take immediate action to protect lives and property.
“The country has to face this crisis unitedly,” he added, encouraging Congress colleagues to support the administration in relief work while ensuring their own safety.
The IMD reported that the landfall of ‘Dana’ began around 12:05 am on Thursday night and was completed by approximately 8:30 am on Friday. The severe cyclone hit the landmass with wind speeds of 110 km/h but has since weakened into a cyclonic storm. Currently, the cyclone is centered about 50 km north-northwest of Dhamra and 30 km northeast of Bhadrak town. The IMD anticipates that the cyclone will continue to move northwestward across north Odisha and gradually weaken into a deep depression over the next six hours, with continuous surveillance conducted via the Doppler weather radar at Paradip.
