Chandigarh, 13th Sept. As Haryana gears up for its assembly elections on October 5, the affluence of its candidates has sparked considerable interest. The disclosures in their poll affidavits not only shed light on their financial statuses but also provide a window into the broader dynamics of political influence and electoral competition in the state.
At the forefront is Captain Abhimanyu, the BJP’s nominee for the Narnaund seat. With declared assets totaling a staggering Rs 417 crore, including Rs 369.03 crore in moveable assets and Rs 47.96 crore in immovable property, Captain Abhimanyu stands as the wealthiest candidate in the state. His financial portfolio includes investments in bonds, debentures, and shares worth Rs 251 crore, alongside gold jewellery and other valuables amounting to Rs 21.53 lakh. This considerable wealth underscores not just his financial clout but also the financial power often associated with political success.
In contrast, Savitri Jindal, the independent candidate contesting from Hisar, has declared assets worth Rs 270 crore. Jindal’s wealth, largely inherited, includes Rs 190 crore in moveable assets and Rs 80 crore in immovable property. Despite her considerable assets, she does not own a car, reflecting a different set of priorities or a more conservative approach to asset management compared to her peers. As the mother of BJP MP Naveen Jindal and widow of prominent industrialist O.P. Jindal, her political and financial profile highlights the intersection of legacy and wealth in Haryana’s electoral politics.
Former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, representing the Congress from Garhi Sampla Kiloi, has declared assets worth Rs 26.48 crore. Although significantly less than his wealthier counterparts, Hooda’s assets still include gold jewellery valued at Rs 1.32 crore and a collection of firearms. His comparatively modest wealth relative to other prominent candidates might be indicative of a different approach to political power or a reflection of his party’s current standing and resources.
Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Abhay Singh Chautala’s assets, amounting to Rs 61 crore, include Rs 37.31 crore in moveable assets and Rs 23.70 crore in immovable property. His possession of multiple vehicles, including tractors and cars, and valuable items such as gold and diamonds further illustrates the financial strength within regional political circles.
Dushyant Chautala, leader of the Jannayak Janta Party and former deputy chief minister, has declared assets worth Rs 82.08 crore, with substantial holdings in both moveable and immovable assets. His impressive portfolio includes gold jewellery and diamonds, highlighting his significant financial base as he campaigns from Uchana Kalan.
As the state prepares for polling on October 5, the BJP is seeking a third consecutive term in office, facing a vigorous challenge from a rejuvenated Congress, which aims to leverage anti-incumbency sentiments. The wealth disclosures of candidates serve not only as a measure of their financial standing but also reflect broader political narratives and regional dynamics. In Haryana’s electoral landscape, where financial resources often play a crucial role, these figures offer a crucial lens through which to assess the interplay of wealth and political power.
